PHENOLOGY

Phenology

Fifth Week of January

Barred owls hang around feeding stations looking for voles, mice, and shrews. Some European starlings have begun showing yellow on their bills, an early spring sign. Starlings' bills change from black to yellow as the spring nesting season approaches. A January thaw will send honey bees out on cleansing flights, and rouse some raccoons and skunks from their winter sleeping dens for the first time.
