PHENOLOGY

Phenology

Fifth Week of May

The first monarch butterflies have arrived in Minnesota, following the development of milkweeds on which they lay their eggs. Tall bearded irises, early peonies, and Northern Lights azaleas are blooming nicely, as are black locust trees. Young eastern bluebirds and black-capped chickadees are fledging, and white-tailed deer fawns are being born. Both snapping and painted turtles come up on dry land to lay their eggs.
