PHENOLOGY

Phenology

Third Week of August

Monarch butterflies have begun aggregating, the beginning state in their migration. Purple martins and other swallows line up on utility wires as they also prepare for migration. The wild cucumber, an annual vine, is at bloom peak with clusters of blossoms that look like white candles. The best time to seed a lawn in Minnesota and Wisconsin is between August 15 and September 10. The small grain harvest continues. Both great and common ragweeds shed much pollen; these two plants probably account for more hayfever symptoms than all other plants put together.
