PHENOLOGY

Phenology

First Week of October

Apple growers are now picking Haralson, Sweet Sixteen, Keepsake, and Regent, all are known as late season apples. Minnesota is third in soybean production and fourth in corn production in the U.S., and now is the prime time for the combining of both crops. White-tailed deer have changed into their gray-brown winter coats. Look for woodchucks carrying mouthfuls of dried leaves into underground dens as they prepare to hibernate. Huge flocks of migrating red-winged blackbirds and common grackles stream overhead in undulating rivers of life, sometimes are a mile or more long.
