PHENOLOGY

Phenology

Fourth Week of November

Fresh-cut pines, spruces, and firs to be used in holiday celebrations and as Christmas trees appear on retail lots. A good share of these trees were grown on plantations or tree farms in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Muskrats can be seen up on new pond ice, eating water plants they gathered from below. Expect to see a thousand or more migrating tundra swans on the backwaters of the Mississippi River south of Wabasha along the Weaver Bottoms, and more swans than that a couple of miles south of Brownsville. Along the Gunflint Trail area, birders look for pine grosbeaks and gray jays, Bohemian waxwings and common redpolls.
