Phenology

First Week of May

Southern Minnesota backyard birders look for the "big three" to return - the first Baltimore orioles, rose-breasted grosbeaks, and ruby-throated hummingbirds. In the north it may be another week before these welcome migrants arrive. Male American toads begin their loud, trilling mating songs. Nerstrand Big Woods State Park northwest of Faribault is known for its spring woodland wildflowers; close to two dozen species bloom including wild geranium, wood anemone, Minnesota dwarf trout-lily, and jack-in-the-pulpit.

May 4, 2017: First shade noticed in deciduous forests from newly leafed out sugar maples, basswoods, and more. Wild grape vines had first leaves open.
