Eastern cottonwood seeds drift in the air on cotton carriers. American bittersweet and wild grape vines are blooming. Wild turkey hens are seen with tiny chicks. Broods of black-capped chickadee young are fledging. Common tree frogs are very vocal and are the dominant amphibians calling this late in spring.

May 27, 2017: First 70 degree F of the year in the Tofte/Lutsen area brought out black flies but also serviceberry flowers, plus the first northern bluebell flowers.
